Improving Your GPA: Tips and Tricks

Nearly every student wants to earn a higher GPA, and there is really only one tried and true method for improving a grade point average-earning higher grades! However, there are many ways to earn higher grades, and mastering a few of these tips and tricks can help you raise your GPA no matter what your current GPA is.

  1. Study. Obviously, the best place to start is by improving your coursework. Ask your professors what you need to do to improve your performance in courses, and work hard to master course material. The better you do in each class, the higher your GPA will go. Ask for extra credit when possible, or join a school study group.
  2. Spread out your hardest classes. If you know you are required to take a few courses that will be more difficult for you, spread them out over a few semesters, so you aren't taking them all at once. This way, you won't have one really bad semester, you can average out the difficult classes with classes in which you will be more successful, and you'll have more time each semester to devout to the one hard class.
  3. Boost your GPA with an easy class each term. Take electives that you know you will do well in. A guaranteed "A" in a course that's easy for you will go a long way toward lifting up your average across all your courses.
  4. Exercise the pass/fail option if you know you aren't going to do well in a course. This way it won't be figured into your GPA. Be aware, though, that many schools have limits on how often you can do this, so check with your advisor first.
