Los Angeles City College (LACC) has existed or over 90 years. It is the oldest of all the community colleges in Los Angeles, celebrating almost a century of academic excellence.

The piece of land on which the college was constructed was originally owned by a farmer called Sullivan Dennis. Just outside LACC is among the nine distinct campuses of the LA Community College District.

In 1909, Hollywood and downtown LA got connected by the Pacific Electric Interurban Railroad. This led to rapid development in the area. In 1914, the education board in LA moved Normal School for the teachers to the area. In 1919, the Italian Romanesque campus was changed to be the campus of UCLA. In 1929, the college was moved to Westwood, and in that year, it admitted the first 1,300 students. Nine years later, its name was changed to Los Angeles City College.

LACC is among the most diverse and vibrant campuses in Los Angeles. It neighbors Echo Park and Silver Lake and is located just a few minutes' from Hollywood. Its professional and vocational programs are offered at a fraction of what private and state colleges charge. The USA Today News ranked it among the best three Southern California Community Colleges. LACC provides adult learners and other students with important pathways that enhance their employment and gives them a chance to pursue advanced education.

LACC offers more than 30 well-defined programs for Student Services. In 2019, about 1,000 students transferred to 4-year universities. The college offers 15 associate degrees, which allow students to get admission to the CSU system. There are about 100 degrees and about 50 certificate courses that students can choose from.

The college has debate and math teams that are recognized nationally for their outstanding performance. LACC's cinema, television, and theater programs are among the leading in LA. The classrooms in the college are more accommodating than those in large universities. The smaller classes ensure an excellent student/tutor ratio that allows for effective interactions.

LACC alumni include a Nobel Laureate, technology professionals, medical professionals, Grammy and Emmy Award winners, Oscar winners, business leaders, politicians, civic leaders, and notable educators. For example, Morgan Freeman, LACC alumni is a renowned film narrator and actor who, in 2005, won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

He has also received Oscar nominations for performances in Invictus, The Shawshank Redemption, Driving Miss Daisy, and Street Smart. The creator of Star Trek series, Eugene Roddenberry, was also a LACC alumnus. He was a producer and a TV screenwriter.

Odetta Holmes was a human rights activist who was the main voice of the movement of civil rights. She was also a lyricist, guitarist, actress, and singer. Her music performances largely comprised American spirituals, jazz, blues, and folk music.

Distance Education

LACC is also offering distance education for those who can’t attend the college physically. You can choose this program if you have a family and/or work obligation that can not allow you to attend classes. If you are self-motivated, self-directed, and independent then a hybrid or an online course is the right choice for you.

LACC distance learning courses can be fully online or hybrid. In the hybrid program. In the hybrid program, you may attend some classes in person and supplement this with some learning activities that are conducted online.

In the fully online program, all the course work is done online including assessments, discussions, distribution of learning materials, instructions, and other activities related to the course.
